Now that the big parts of making a baby have been shared, I will start posting weekly about life and our adventures of motherhood with Emma. I thought I’d start this off with a little behind why my kitchen looks like a page from pinterest with the amount of mason jars we now own and somehow continue to purchase, not to mention all the accessories that go with them. We decided early on in pregnancy that we were going to be “those moms” who made their baby’s food and have stuck with it almost to a 95% rate. We have spent many a weekend doing nothing but have every burner on the stove going at the same time with both the blender and food processor going at the same time. We do both jarring/canning and freezing for her food. This process has made it so we now have a huge pressure cooker to can her foods and a peeler because having to peel 2 bags of apples and pears is not fun, at all.
We wanted to make her food ourselves because we didn’t want her exposed to the processed foods so early on. Unfortunately Diana could only breast feed for a short time due to her milk supply not coming in so she has been on formula since day 1 and we felt that doing the organic homemade food was some small way we could help counterbalance that. We of course, took to the internet to figure out what we could give her and when we could; how to prepare everything; how long things could be stored. What we found was a plethora of information, and we set out on our quest. We learned very quickly which foods Emma liked, and which ones she DIDN’T like. For me the more amusing aspect of eating foods was that she tended to have the same palate as myself. I made her all the things on the list from the doctor that she was allowed to eat, even though some were made in a different location and simply given to her at home (because peas… ewwwwwwww). I even gave things to her with a smile and no negative energy because I know she needed to eat them, but without fail to this day, she made her choices and sticks to them; thank goodness, because again peas… ewwwwwwww.
What foods do you recommend for our next combos?? Here is our go to of what is almost constantly in pouches in the freezer for school or canned.
- Apples, Sweet Potato, Cinnamon (Cook both Apples & Sweet Potatoes)
- Pears & Cinnamon (Cook Pears)
- Mango, sometimes mixed with Banana (Neither cooked)
- Never cook Banana or can it when it comes to pureed baby food, it’s no bueno for baby’s digestive system
- Cuban Black Beans & Chicken w/ Veggies (My mother-in-law makes these combos)
- Peach & Spinach (Don’t cook Peach, Steam Spinach)
- You can’t actually taste the spinach, it smells and tastes only like peaches
